Historic Home Exterior Renovation FAQs
How do I know if my home is considered “historic”?
To find out if your home is located in a historic district or considered a historic landmark or a contributing structure, you can type your address into this city provided database website: www.portlandmaps.com, then click zoning. There are three categories listed that you will need to look into: “historic district”, “conservation district”, and “national register district”.
What are my limitations for updating my home if it is considered “historic”?
If your home is in a historic district, considered a historic landmark or is contributing generally, any exterior changes to the home need to go through historic review. Examples range from adding an ADU to adding a window, building an addition, adding a porch, (I think we need to provide more examples here, I do not remember what else falls under the reviewer’s jurisdiction) In some cases, interior changes may need to go through review as well, but this is rare. If a project must go through a historic review, Arciform will design the project in keeping with the historic details of the home, meet with the review committee and will compile all the documentation for the review and help you figure out the fee structure.
My siding and millwork are in rough shape. Can Arciform help restore them rather than replace them?
This depends on the condition of the millwork. Arciform helps you assess if repair or replacement are the best cause of action. We have established ourselves as the expert on preserving original details that make a structure special. Our talented carpenters in the field can repair what is worth repairing and the craftspeople in our 10,000 sf wood shop can recreate the damaged elements exactly as they were built originally.
